Purpose:

To provide a two-day training course for Graduate-Level Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of transnasal endoscopy to assess pharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES assessment protocol, and scoring and analysis procedures.

Objectives: At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • describe & demonstrate safe & efficient manual dexterity skills necessary to insert & manipulate a nasoendoscope to assess the oropharynx, larynx, & hypopharynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • describe & apply the elements comprising the standard FEES administration protocol when assessing oropharyngeal dysphagia;
  • analyze & explain normal & abnormal swallowing events using correct anatomical terms & predetermined scoring scales for airway protection & pharyngeal peristalsis;
  • describe & apply predetermined & industry-standard steps & precautions when disinfecting or sterilizing endoscopic equipment after use; and
  • identify & describe patient-related risks & contraindications for administering the FEES procedure.

Matthew Ward, M.S., CCC-SLP: A contract associate with SA Swallowing Services, Clinical Education Director, and researcher. He has practiced primarily in hospitals and nursing facilities. His specialty areas are swallowing, speech, language, and cognitive disorders.  He has been with SASS since 2016 and is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee.

Travis Camp, M.S., CCC-SLP: Formerly, a traveling medical Speech-Language Pathologist in several states, he is licensed and certified in FEES Endoscopy serving hospitals and nursing care facilities in middle Tennessee and northern Georgia.  He joined SASS in 2018 as a FEES clinician and has moved forward as an instructor and researcher.

Michelle Skelley, M.Ed., CCC-SLP:  Co-founder and President of SA Swallowing Services, she is a medical Speech-Language Pathologist and FEES Endoscopist serving rehabilitation hospitals and nursing homes across Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and Georgia.  She also is the supervisor/instructor for on-site FEES competency training.  She is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in accordance with Tennessee statutes.

Sherri Coker, M.S., CCC-SLP; RN: As a medical Speech-Language Pathologist for six years, she has worked in hospitals and nursing care facilities. She is a contract Associate with SA Swallowing Services and is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee.

Christina Everett, M.S., CCC-SLP: Contract associate with SA Swallowing Services.  A medical Speech-Language Pathologist with clinical experience in acute care and nursing home care. She is ASHA certified and is licensed and certified as an instructor in swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee. She joined SASS in 2020 as a clinician, instructor, and researcher.

John R. Ashford, Ph.D., CCC-SLP: Co-founder and Educational Director of SA Swallowing Services, and has over 37 years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist. He is retired from the Veterans Administration and as a University Professor. He is licensed and certified as an instructor of swallowing endoscopy in accordance with Tennessee statutes.

Intended Audience Only:

Clinical Speech-Language Pathologists with earned Master’s degree or above who work at the University of Alabama.  Graduate students in their final year of training and who have completed a university dysphagia course may attend. Registration by non-SLP professionals or SLPs working outside the University of Alabama System is not permitted.

Continuing Education Credit:

This course is offered for 1.6 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level).

Completion Requirements:

Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.
