Intended Audience Only:

Graduate students attending Moravian University and practicing Speech-Language Pathologists from outside the university who are working in the medical community.  Registration by non-SLP professionals is not permitted.

Purpose:

To provide a two-day training course for Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of transnasal endoscopy to assess pharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES assessment protocol, and scoring and analysis procedures.

Objectives:

At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Apply safe & effective manual skills using nasendoscopy to assess the oropharynx, hypopharynx, & larynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • Describe & use specific FEES protocols & procedures to capture & assess dynamic & complex swallowing events;
  • Describe & evaluate the anatomy & physiology of swallow peristalsis & airway protection functions during normal & abnormal swallowing events, as viewed endoscopically;
  • Identify, understand, & use standard infection control procedures with any FEES procedure;
  • Identify any risks or contraindications for administering the FEES procedure; and
  • Score, analyze, & interpret FEES results to recommend & guide appropriate interventions.

Matthew Ward, M.S., CCC-SLP:  Contract associate with SA Swallowing Services, Clinical Education Director, and researcher. He has practiced primarily in hospitals and nursing facilities. His specialty areas are swallowing, speech, language, and cognitive disorders.  He has been with SASS since 2016 and is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee.

Travis Camp, M.S., CCC-SLP: Contract associate with SA Swallowing Services. Formerly, a traveling Speech-Language Pathologist providing service to nursing care facilities in Tennessee, he became associated with SASS in 2018. He is a clinician, instructor, researcher, and licensed and certified as an instructor in swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee and Georgia.

Christina Everett, M.S., CCC-SLP: Contract associate with SA Swallowing Services.  A medical Speech-Language Pathologist with clinical experience in acute care and nursing home care. She is ASHA certified and is licensed and certified as an instructor in swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee. She joined SASS in 2020 as a clinician, instructor, and researcher.

Sherri Coker, M.S., CCC-SLP; RN: Sherri has worked in hospitals and nursing care facilities as a medical Speech-Language Pathologist for six years. Prior to coming to Speech-Language Pathology, she practiced as a registered ER nurse for eight years. She is a contract Associate with SA Swallowing Services and is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee.

Michelle Skelley, M.Ed., CCC-SLP:  Co-founder and President of SA Swallowing Services, she is a medical Speech-Language Pathologist and FEES Endoscopist serving rehabilitation hospitals and nursing homes across Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and Georgia.  She also is the supervisor/instructor for on-site FEES competency training.  She is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in accordance with Tennessee statutes.

John R. Ashford, Ph.D., CCC-SLP: Co-founder and Educational Director of SA Swallowing Services, and has over 37 years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Course Registration and Tuition:

  • Students: $425.00
  • SLP Clinicians: $600.00
  • Hands-on endoscope training and a 140-page training manual (lecture powerpoints, scoring forms, report examples, other information) to take home.  A maximum of 20 participants (15 students and 5 SLPS) will be registered for this course. Student and group discounts are not permitted.
  • Complete the registration information requested, either Student or SLP Clinician on the Checkout Page.  Be sure to include your ASHA or NSSHLA account number for ASHA CEUs.
  • Participants must pay online using a credit card only. NO checks.

Continuing Education Credit:

This course is offered for 1.6 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level).

Completion Requirements:

Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Course Switching and Cancellation Policies: 

Cancellations: 30 days or more before course date: 100% of course tuition, less credit card processing fees, will be refunded

10 to 29 days before the course date: 50% of tuition, less credit card processing fees, will be refunded

Less than 10 days before course date: No refund of course tuition.

Cancellations must be in writing, preferably by email. Allow 30 days after course completion for refunds.

Course Switching:  Switching registration to an earlier or later course-if seats are available-is permitted without charge if the course switch is made 30 days or more prior to the first or original course registration.  A transfer and processing fee of $150.00 will be charged when course switches are made less than 30 days from the first or original course registration.
