Purpose:

To provide a two-day training course for Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of transnasal endoscopy to assess pharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES assessment protocol, and scoring and analysis procedures.

Objectives: At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Apply safe & effective manual skills using nasendoscopy to assess the oropharynx, hypopharynx, & larynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • Describe & use specific FEES protocols & procedures to capture & assess dynamic & complex swallowing events;
  • Describe & evaluate the anatomy & physiology of swallow peristalsis & airway protection functions during normal & abnormal swallowing events, as viewed endoscopically;
  • Identify, understand, & use standard infection control procedures with any FEES procedure;
  • Identify any risks or contraindications for administering the FEES procedure; and
  • Score, analyze, & interpret FEES results to recommend & guide appropriate interventions. 

Training Information:

  •  140-page training manual (lecture powerpoints, scoring forms, report examples, other information) to take home.
  • 12 lectures covering anatomy to equipment to infection control to protocols to scoring and analyses (see agenda).
  • One-on-one supervised endoscopy training using a prescribed step-by-step protocol to learn safe nasal insertion and pharyngeal manipulation for optimal viewing and recording of the swallowing events.
  • Each participant will complete 15 directly supervised FEES procedures (not passes) learning to use a prescribed administration protocol. Subjects will be the course faculty (10) and the course participants (5).
  • An analysis teaching laboratory will provide actual scoring and analyses of actual FEES studies from real patients. Each participant will use an Apple computer provided and scoring/analysis processes to make decisions.  Discussion will follow.

Matthew Ward, M.S., CCC-SLP: A contract associate with SA Swallowing Services, Clinical Education Director, and researcher. He has practiced primarily in hospitals and nursing facilities. His specialty areas are swallowing, speech, language, and cognitive disorders.  He has been with SASS since 2016 and is licensed and certified as a provider and instructor of swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee.

Christina Everett, M.S., CCC-SLP: A medical Speech-Language Pathologist with clinical experience in acute care and nursing home care. She is ASHA certified and is licensed and certified as an instructor in swallowing endoscopy in Tennessee. She joined SASS in 2019 as a clinician, instructor, and researcher.

Michelle Skelley, M.Ed., CCC-SLP: Co-founder and President of SA Swallowing Services, she has over 20 years of experience as a practicing medical Speech-Language Pathologist in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and home health services and has five years of experience administering FEES.  She is licensed and certified as an instructor of swallowing endoscopy in accordance with Tennessee statutes.

John R. Ashford, Ph.D., CCC-SLP: Co-founder and Educational Director of SA Swallowing Services, he has over 40 years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Speech-Language Pathologists with earned Master’s degree or above. This training is for SLPs who are employed by the Ochsner Health System only.  Registration by non-Ochsner Health System SLPs and non-SLP professionals will not be permitted.

Completion Requirements:

Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Course Switching and Cancellation Policies: 

Cancellations: 30 days or more before course date: 100% of course tuition, less credit card processing fees, will be refunded

Less than 10 days before course date: No refund of course tuition.
