Course Date: November 5-6, 2021

Purpose:

To provide a two-day training course for Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of transnasal endoscopy to assess pharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES assessment protocol and scoring and analysis procedures.

Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Apply safe & effective manual skills using nasoendoscopy to assess the oropharynx, hypopharynx, & larynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • Describe & use specific FEES protocols & procedures to capture & assess dynamic & complex swallowing events;
  • Describe & evaluate the anatomy & physiology of swallow peristalsis & airway protection functions during normal & abnormal swallowing events, as viewed endoscopically;
  • Identify, understand, & use standard infection control procedures with any FEES procedure;
  • Identify any risks or contraindications for administering the FEES procedure; and
  • Score, analyze, & interpret FEES results to recommend & guide appropriate interventions.

Intended Audience Only:

Speech-Language Pathologists:  Second-year graduate students or SLPs with earned Master’s degree or above associated with the healthcare community at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Course Registration and Tuition:

  • $500.00.   Includes hands-on endoscope training, and a 140-page training manual (lecture powerpoints, scoring forms, report examples, other information) to take home.  Student and group discounts are not permitted. Participants may register online using a credit card or PayPal (you do not have to have a PayPal account). Personal checks not accepted. If corporate-sponsored, the sponsoring company may pay by check.

Continuing Education Credit: 1.6 ASHA CEUs

 

Program Completion Requirements:

Participants are expected to be present for the entire program to receive the designated ASHA CEUs. Partial credit will not be provided.
