To provide a two-day Basic FEES training course for Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of nasoendoscopy to assess oropharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES® assessment protocol.

Objectives: At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • -Use safe & effective manual skills using nasopharyngoscopy to assess the oropharynx, hypopharynx, & larynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • -Describe & use specific FEES® protocols & procedures to assess dynamic swallowing events;
  • -Describe anatomy & physiology of normal & abnormal swallow events, as viewed endoscopically;
  • -Identify & use standard infection control procedures, & identify risks & contraindications for nasoendoscopy; and
  • -Score, analyze & interpret FEES® results to recommend appropriate diets and interventions.
  • -Have up to 15 successful endoscope passes on normal subjects following FEES procedures.

Intended Audience Only:

Speech-Language Pathologists with earned Master’s degree or above who are working in the medical community.  Graduate students in their final year of training and have completed a university dysphagia course may attend. Registration by other professions will not be permitted.

Course Location:

Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.   After registering for this course, a Letter of Confirmation and course agenda will be sent to you by email.

Course Content, Registration, and Tuition:

The Basic FEES Training Course includes presentations on anatomy/physiology of swallowing, FEES-specific equipment, proper endoscopy handling, medical issues with nasoendoscopy, infection control procedures, FEES protocols and procedures, Abnormal swallow findings, scoring scheme, determining biomechanics of abnormal swallowing, use of endoscopy in treatment, hands-on endoscope training,  analysis learning and practice using computer-exercises, and a 140-page training manual (lecture power points, scoring forms, report examples, other information) to take home.

$450.00 for two-days basic FEES training. maximum of 20 participants will be registered per course. Student and group discounts are not permitted. Participants may register by check or online using PayPal (you do not have to have a PayPal account).

Continuing Education Credit:

This course is offered for 1.5 ASHA CEU’s (Intermediate Level; Professional Area). ASHA CE Logo





Program Completion Requirements:

Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not receive ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Course Cancellation Policy:

100% of course tuition will be refunded if cancellation is received 30 days prior to the course date. 50% of tuition will be refunded if cancellation is less than 30 days prior to the course date. Cancellations must be in writing. All refunds returned following course date.

Day Two: 8:00 to 4:30

  • Medical issues & nasoendoscopy
  • Infection control policies & procedures
  • FEES protocols and procedures
  • FEES & the abnormal swallow
  • FEES scoring, analyses, & interpretation
  • FEES, behavioral intervention & EBP
  • Hands-on nasoendoscopy/FEES labs & computer analysis labs
