FEES 2018:  Instrumental Dysphagia Assessment

Course Dates:   March 24-25, 2018, July 14-15, 2018, September 22-23, 2018, & November 3-4, 2018

Purpose:

To provide a two-day Basic FEES training course for Speech-Language Pathologists in the use of fiberoptic nasoendoscopy to assess oropharyngeal dysphagia using a standard FEES® assessment protocol.

Objectives: At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Use safe & effective manual skills using nasopharyngoscopy to assess the oropharynx, hypopharynx, & larynx before, during, & after each swallowing event;
  • Describe & use specific FEES® protocols & procedures to assess dynamic swallowing events;
  • Describe anatomy & physiology of normal & abnormal swallow events, as viewed endoscopically;
  • Identify & use standard infection control procedures, & identify risks & contraindications for nasoendoscopy; and
  • Score, analyze & interpret FEES® results to recommend appropriate diets and interventions.
  • Have 10 to 15 successful endoscope passes on normal subjects following FEES procedures.

Program Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Course Location:

Select Specialty Hospital, 2004 Hayes Street, Nashville, Tennessee.  All courses held on first floor, Charity Hall Education Facility.  After registering for a course, a Letter of Confirmation and course agenda will be sent to you.

Hotel Accommodations:

Hotel accommodations are at the discretion of the participant. Several hotels are located in close vicinity (1 to 3 blocks) of Select Specialty Hospital.

Lunch provided by SASS both days

Course Cancellation Policy: 100% of course tuition will be refunded if cancellation is received 30 days prior to the course date. 50% of tuition will be refunded if cancellation is less than 30 days prior to the course date. Cancellations must be in writing. All refunds returned following course date.

Day One: 8:00 to 4:30

  • ASHA Position, State regulations, SLPs, & endoscopy
  • Anatomy through the endoscopy
  • Normal & abnormal swallowing physiology
  • Fiberoptic Basics
  • Equipment: costs, operation, scope handling, & demonstrations
  • Endoscopy training with head models
  • FEES materials, administration, & protocols
  • Hands-on nasoendoscopy/FEES labs & computer analysis labs

Day Two: 8:00 to 4:30

  • Medical issues & nasoendoscopy
  • Infection control policies & procedures
  • FEES protocols and procedures
  • FEES & the abnormal swallow
  • FEES scoring, analyses, & interpretation
  • FEES, behavioral intervention & EBP
  • Hands-on nasoendoscopy/FEES labs & computer analysis labs
